How amazing is this A Bird of II Feathers bag by Mimi Pong? I spotted it in a recent issue of Frankie Magazine that I picked up this week. I would love to tote my schoolbooks around in this beauty! It takes the fairytale metaphor one step further; when turned inside-out, it morphs into a neutral coloured cygnet. The transformation reminds me of The Swan Princess, well, I guess it's more like The Ugly Duckling.

Swan accessories have been spotted all over the blogosphere in the past few months and this tote makes for a pretty perfect accessory for those of us with a romantic heart.

Here is my first official couch surfing style post! I purchased this fantastic skirt for a steal of a deal from a clothing sale a friend was having because she is moving overseas. I blabbed on about cream and how ideal it is for pairing with pastels in this post and am so delighted with this piece. It's heavy and warm to carry me through those chilly, (and rainy!) days for the next few months.

I love little porkpie hats and one of my summer staples this year will hopefully be a straw boater. I need to find one that a. fits on my tiny head and b. does not fall off of my tiny head. But seriously, what is a more perfect summery staple than a straw cap? At this point in the long gray winter I am really beginning to pine for sunshine and warmer weather. I'm compromising by making really summery music mixes - sunny days, can't wait!

The Peter Pan collar is still tucked securely over my heart - such a timeless detail provided by this dress from the 1960's. The small, rounded collars first became known as the "Peter Pan" when fairytale character Peter Pan himself was emblematically styled in one in a 1904 film.

I think mint is fresh paired with both lighter colours and black. These thick HUE tights were $17, but have been an invaluable addition to my wardrobe, as they're cold enough to keep that winter chill of my gams.

Unfortunately, I may be taking a blogging hiatus - slowdown? - for a few weeks. Last night, (well, at four in the morning yesterday,) my landlord drunkenly tried to break into my apartment and ended up assaulting another tenant who had accidentally left his door unlocked. Because my former home is no longer safe, (sad!) I'm living out of a suitcase and couch surfing while I get all my belongings stocked in storage and find a new place.

I don't know, maybe this will become "Living Out of a Suitcase: a Style Diary." Part of personal style is creativity, right? I'm frustrated right now, but I do love to blog! What do you think? Take a little break? Keep posting (less varied) outfits?

I never realize that I'm wearing all of the same brand until I go to type up where I purchased the items. Sometimes, pieces from the same shop just go so well together! Well, that's really the brand's intent, and I feel like it worked fairly well here. I'm really into this minty door - although the tripod and timer method of snapping photos is still testing my patience. It's so hard to get consistency with light and focus. Oh, for a remote! (They don't make remotes for my camera.)

I love circle skirts and when I first spotted this whirly-twirly pumpkin piece at H&M, at $50, it was not in the budget. But! I travelled back to H&M a few months later with a larger budget - and they had one left in my size! Lucky! I was surprised, because it seems like the turnover at that store is insane, with items zipping in and out on a weekly basis. This skirt is of a pretty good construction, (a structured waist instead of elastic!) and I intend to mix-and-match it with black, cream, and caramelly colours.

All the sweet comments on my last outfit really made my week. Thanks so much for the support, guys! I seemed to have gained a few followers as well: hello new friends!

Blushing Rose

Yay! Today was a lovely day with some sunshine peeking through the clouds for a few hours in the afternoon. I celebrated these events by wearing MY FAVOURITE BLOUSE - featuring a rosy pastel hue, embroidered roses, and ascot. (I should have taken a detail shot of the embroidery. Next time!)

In other news, I went to see some bands play in a basement on Friday night. As I was leaving, I stepped on a board with a nail in it, got stuck, and fell on someone. Oh, my pride, it stings! Anyone had any similarly embarrassing mishaps? Let's revel in them!

Still Green

Unless it snows here, things remain green through the seasons. Spring/Summer/Fall/Winter really only differentiate from each other by how much rain is falling. Yes, these are winter photos! I grew up in a completely different climate with extremely polarized seasons, so this is pretty bizarre for me still.

I am digging 1950's blouses hard right now. While I love the prevalence of ascots/bow details on 1970's/1980's blouses I am not a huge fan of puff shoulders, which both eras seem to be in love with. The 1950's seemed to work with a simple cut and instead focused on making the blouse unique with fabric and detailing - like the chiffon, fancy collar, and little gem buttons on this piece.

Colourblocking has been a big deal this season, but rather than pair jewel tones I prefer for an easier transition between soft colours. I really prefer navy/maroon together than a firetruck red and royal blue, although, that's totally up to taste!

Days like these have me SERIOUSLY QUESTIONING why British Columbia doesn't utilize more wind power. This is such an opportunity for clean energy usage and to ease off our dependency on oil. I mean, look at these photos. We need to get some windmills up, stat.

I'm not sure if this pink mohair coat is from the 1950's, or the 1980's impersonating the 1950's, but either way I love it. Furry, warm, and the perfect pastel pink - what a coat! Vintage dreamgirl Hannah Metz seems to share my love of mohair, as I have seen her wear similar outerwear in outfit photos. Her classic looks and perfect curls have me constantly gravitating away from modernity and inspire me to stock my wardrobe with secondhand finery rather than falling for some of the throwaway style that big box stores push.

I get one of two reactions when I wear this in public: a. "girl, what do you think you are? A marshmallow?" or b. people find me really approachable and strangers will often strike up conversation - not about the coat, just about life. Wearing it always leads me on an interesting day.

This 1960's babiest of blues dress is one of my new favourites! I love a big collar and the fit is flattering and comfortable. I paired the pink/blue because I love pastels and the layering baby colours has been spotted on S/S 2012 runways as a hot trend. Soft colours: together as one? Yes, please!

How Sweet It Is

This giant mustard scarf has been keeping me real cozy. Colour wise, I have been experimenting with layering similar shades. (Peach and mustard? They're close enough.) Layering is key to staying comfortable and snug during this season. By all appearances I should be freezing in this outfit, but I'm three layers deep in a blouse, sweater, and scarf. I could have thrown on a slip and had four layers! Stacked.

When I thrifted this skirt, the length hit just below my knees. I hemmed a few inches off myself, by hand, and it started to unravel. A kind friend gave it a proper seam with her sewing machine. But after being shortened twice, it's a little... short.

That's what black tights are for!

The Mitzi Cocoa NYE Outfit Guide

New Year's Eve is one of those ideal dress-up nights. The style rules on overdressing or looking "over-the-top" recede. It's one of the nights when I can combine three of my favourite activities: dressing up, holding a glass of champagne, and making witty observations about life. I created a simplified style guide to having a fun and stylish New Year's. First of all, one needs...

a party dress! I have seen a lot of dresses advised as NYE appropriate that resemble sequined bathing suits... while some ladies work these, the dare-to-wear look is not for me. I'm more comfortable and confident in a vintage dress with glammy details. A flattering silhouette, feminine features like bows or lace, and a colour that flatters my skin and hair tones are qualities I love. This taupe 1950's cocktail dress is my ideal garment to prance through the night in (while drinking champagne.)

A petite clutch or purse is crucial for toting around the little things a lady needs on a night out. This black tapestry clutch is adorable, and I love how the embroidered details would contrast with the lace pattern on the dress. While I do love a good clutch, I would advise wearing a purse with a strap, even if it's a petite chain to slip over the wrist. After a glass or two of champagne, some of us have a tendency to forget things.

SEQUINS! The last night of the year is all about glamming it up. I die for this sequin-studded bow brooch. (Seriously? Sparkle AND bows?) However, all sequined and/or glittered accessories are welcome. Some would say to tone things down, use a key piece that shimmers and highlights your outfit, and avoid looking like a disco ball. I say nay to these people - if you want to swath yourself in sequins and glitter like cut crystal, girl, there is no one stopping you.

Last, but surely not least, one needs a pair of bangin' shoes. These sequin sparkle pumps are ideal candidates for my feet. I use this evening to wear my highest, prettiest, most impractical heels! Shoes have been referred to "dreams on your feet" and a beautiful pair are the perfect way to end, (or begin,) an outfit. Also, being four to six inches taller than usual feels pretty good.

Those are my four elements to a successful New Year's Eve look. I hope it's useful/inspiring, and most important, everyone has a joyous and safe evening tomorrow.

Finally have the chance to post some outfit photos I've been saving up. I finished the semester with one class shy of solid straight A's, (feels so good when hard work pays off!) and then took a vacation for about a week - on which I alternated between napping and relaxing like it was a profession. Irish cream and coffee is one of my favourite treats - so warm and relaxing!

It doesn't usually snow where I live. Instead, we have between four and six months of gray and rain. It can be debilitating, but my style rotates around layering and keeping my feet dry rather than insulating against a more serious cold climate. Throwing a sweater over a belted dress is one of my favorite ways of wearing my wardrobe year round. A dress may seem like something that can't be mixed and matched as much as a skirt or top, but layering or wearing fancy tights can give it a plethora of different vibes!

Contrasted collars are a pretty hot trend right now. It's a look I'm a huge fan of - big collars on everything, please! I love white collars on black tops - so Wednesday Adams - or black collars on camel tops.

One more week of class! I have an essay, two group projects, and two short fiction pieces to wrap up. Whew! But once I buckle down and get all this done, I know I will feel so good. I really wish I had more time to set up the tripod and document my "I-am-a-manic-stress-case-and-this-is-my-panicked-outfit" looks. I love realism in other blogs, ('I'm sick. This is what I wore. Whatever.') so I try to implement it into my own as much as possible.

My skirt is a bit wrinkled because I don't own an iron. (What?!) I know. It's a work in progress. My boyfriend actually has been teaching me how to iron, but I am so nervous about accidentally melting one of my precious vintage garments. Oh, well! Trial and error!

I do hope the rest of my student readers are getting through the end of semester without too much trouble!

I tromped around in these boots to keep from getting my feet wet a little while ago. (Late post!) This was before it really got into the November cold, when sheer nylons were still feasible. (Maybe I am being a big baby and should just tough out nylon cold with a coat and a big scarf!)

This blouse was my investment in the crop top trend. It has the cut of a crop top, though it can tucked into a high-waisted pencil skirt for a "boxy blouse" look. When I saw it I was so smitten with the bunny-rabbit print - they're even wearing little bows! And I can never resist a peter pan collar. 1960's revival forever, please!

As much as I enjoy a classic, rather demure style during my daytime hours, I have an equal amount of love a sassier evening look. (ie. heels that send my height over six feet and a fake fur coat that looks constructed from urban raccoons.) This look was basically my last opportunity to dress frivolous before the weather snapped into being seriously cold. Unfortunately, cropped coats just don't cut it in Canadian winters. (And neither does hosiery that is mostly composed of holes!)

Oh my, the weeks have been so busy! But I am so very close to getting my bachelor's degree! I am so excited for five years of hard work to be wrapped up. I took a little "me time" today. Nothing relaxes like style blogging and watching Ru Paul's Drag Race!

I adore this flutter sleeve top I found downtown in my city. It is the loveliest shade of cream and sits in a very flattering fashion. I belted it over these little shorts, but it looks lovely tucked into some of my high-waisted skirts too. I am actually a huge fan of flutter sleeves in general. I feel they're both flattering and romantic. I'm not sure if I'm dating the era properly, but they remind me of something worn to a 1930's garden party.

I spent the day ducking in and out of classes. High-waisted shorts are so comfortable for a day which involves TOO MUCH SITTING. Also, these nylons lasted me two or three wears and then ran. Augh! I'm still on the hunt for a good pair that don't shred themselves after a day or so. It's not impossible, right?

I think a fun take on trends is looking at something circulating the season's runways or roadways and putting your own twist on it. I love autumn colours. (Pumpkin orange? YES! Mustard yellow? YES YES!) So, why not combine them?

Tweed is also a hot F/W '11 item and I happen to be a big fan of the classic cloth. I picked this blazer up in a thrift store a few years ago for a couple dollars. I love when a piece I love becomes extra hot for the season!

This was one of those outfits that I debated on posting. Do you ever feel like an outfit looks good in person, but is hard to photograph? This was one of those days. Whatever - here it is! That's what this blog is, right? A style diary.

This sweater is a brighter yellow than I thought when I picked it from the rack. I still love matching hues of mustard to green - especially now that the months are getting colder! A little sweater and a pencil skirt are one of my go-to autumn outfits. I feel ready for school, errands, library work, whatever!

Normally, I avoid puff sleeves, but I was so smitten with the delicate chiffon of this blouse. I love the cream/off-tan colour. Contrasting collars have been a recent trend I am really behind. I find that they either add a little extra sass to a look or the colour of the collar can be matched elsewhere in the outfit.

It's Thanksgiving weekend! And oh man, am I glad it's the weekend. Time to relax! (aka watch Game of Thrones and darn my stockings.)

When I showed my friends this red beret I scored at H&M they said, "don't you already own that?" It is one of those items that I feel is so conducive to my style that it will fit right in with the rest of my closet! I try to avoid impulse buying trend items that while may seem super sweet on the rack... don't really fit in with what I wear on a day-to-day basis.

That's not to say I don't ever wear crazy things! I found a belt that is a white snake with blue jewels for eyes in a thrift store months ago. I am waiting for the perfect outfit combo to whip it out.

I'm wearing jeans! I got a nice pair of denim for my birthday. Unfortunately, as I never buy jeans, I did not know about this rule of "buy the pair tighter than you actually want to fit because they will stretch." And now I have the denim sag butt. Hopefully I am able to exchange them!

This purse was an impulse birthday buy for myself. I went into ALDO to buy some squishy insoles for my wedge heels, (which make them so much for comfortable!) and was sucked into how amazing the cream and orange-y brown contrast is on this purse. Also, TASSELS!

Oxford Heels, Finally

I have been searching for a pair of brown oxford heels for over a year. Imagine my delight when I spotted this pair on the shelf in one of my favourite consignment shops! They were put out that day, (obviously,) and had probably only been sitting there for a few minutes when I snatched them up. $30, and in my size? Yes, please! I can't wait to wear them with everything ever.

Black and brown/tan is one of my favourite colour/shade combinations. The proportions on the dress are a little funny - it was clearly designed for a shorter lady than I. (I'm about 5'7".) The cinching sat at the small of the waist on the model, and it really is an empire waist on me. I created the fit I wanted with a thin belt. The hem of the dress is really just long enough to be appropriate. It is still one of my favourite dresses. Who can resist a cream crochet collar? Not me!

With the start of my final year of university, I am finished with my uniform wearing summer job. This means I can get up to my old antics - drinking copious amounts of green tea, learning like a house on fire, wearing tall shoes, blogging, and wearing my lovely garments.

I love online vintage shopping. However, I frequently run into the problem of a purchase not fitting my body the same it did the mannequin or model in the photo. This has led to a lot of wasted dollars and a lot of disappointment. This dress was one of my few purchases that fits great! I love the contrasting collar, little ascot bow, and floral print. But I mean, what else is new? It combines so many of my favourite things!

During the summer I usually wear more casual outfits. I'm sure everyone strips down for the heat, to a degree, (haha!) but I am completely in favour of lounging around in cut-offs and loose tops for the hot months. (Although, this is one of the first sunny days we've had here.)

Crop tops have been an interesting trend this season for a few reasons. I prefer a crop top paired with something high-waisted as opposed to the 1990's trend of a short shirt with hip-hugging jeans. Both because the current is more flattering on myself and I have mixed feelings on bared midriffs. But, browsing the local boutiques over the last couple of months, shirts that are hip-length or longer seem to have disappeared. It's like, crop-top or no top. What? I mean, I understand the social and financial power of trends but no one needs a closet full of crop-tops.

I found this crocheted lace top in a small clothing shop and it became the first shorter shirt added to my wardrobe. I love the dash of sass it adds to a night out.

Summer is the season for loose tops layered with cuffed button-ups.

I try not to hop on the trend wagon unless I genuinely want to add a piece to my long-lasting wardrobe, but this red-striped crop top is very comfortable and very cute. The little pocket on the right was definitely a selling point.

It still isn't very warm here. I'm not sure if we are going to get much of a summer. My outfits are relying on layers for this temperate weather. The little bit of sunshine sure is nice, though!

A semi-professional outfit for a day of running errands. I mailed off four packages and three letters today. I am a notorious lover of snail mail, but it takes me far too long to set aside the time to sit down, write letters, and wrap parcels.

Recently, I have been gravitating towards printed blouses. Paired with a cardigan or blazer, the print gives that extra pop to an outfit. I'm preparing a post of some of my favourite blouses to be found online, which should be up soon!

I am pretty worn out today, so this will be a brief post. I love matching similar colours and tones, and the brown of these leopard tights and the mustard yellow of this coat seem to be made to be friends.

Summer dresses and tights are one of my favourite ways to stay comfortable when a cold breeze is still whisking through the summer months. These wedge booties are surprisingly easy to walk in, but still less than practical.

Happy Canada Day! No, I am not wearing red and white. Yes, I am grateful to live where I enjoy so many political and social freedoms. I am pretty fortunate to live in a country where I can walk down most streets and feel safe. I can say what I want about who I want. I can choose what to study, where to work, what to read, what to listen to, or who to listen to. I can also wear whatever I want without political or major social restrictions. These are kind of taken for granted by some North Americans, but I feel it's important to appreciate them. Not everyone in the global community feels their citizens deserve the same basic freedoms.

This is the ideal outfit for a day of fun in the (finally!) summer sun. Denim jacket, light top, and swishy skirt make for a comfortable and chic ensemble.

I hope everyone is having a good Canada Day and gets a break to enjoy the weather! (Whatever it may be where you are.)

Mixing masculine and feminine pieces is one of my favourite clothing contrasts. Oxford heels unto themselves are a clash of a masculine shoe paired with the modern femininity of a heel.

I purchased this dress from a discount bin in a vintage shop. It is super 70's and hosted long frilly sleeves as well as a pointed frilly collar. I am a fan of frills and thrills but decided to modernize and warm-weatherize it by hemming the sleeves.

I love pastels paired with neutrals, forever and ever. This coat was my most recent and revered thrift find. Cropped and camel, yes please! The detailing on the dress are rows of white velvet dots and flowers - darling!

Sorry for the photo quality. It was bright, cold, and windy. Seriously, I don't understand why this city isn't run on solar/wind energy. The biosphere is literally smothering us with sun and wind.

Shabby DIY

When I want a particular clothing item, I always try to find it secondhand before opting to purchase new. This is for both environmentally responsible and financial reasons. Recently, one of my favourite clothing pieces has been vintage dresses that have been hemmed and shaped to a more modern fit.

I purchased this lovely dress, (posted a few weeks ago,) from a consignment/vintage/sample shop. Altered by a small brand that I assume the shop purchases wholesale, it came with the label "tokyo.munkey" attached at the neck. There were no care instructions included. I wore it once, then laundered it in my side-loading washing machine on the delicate cycle in cold water.

After it dried, I noticed that all the serging had frayed off along both sides of the skirt. Some of the stitches are coming out in the arms and shoulders. I am super annoyed/dismayed, because I paid good money for this garment and it is completely unrealistic to make something so fragile.

For the Do-It-Yourself movement and altered vintage to be a viable and socially responsible alternative to factory made clothing, it has to be of a competitive quality. A dress that has been machine sewn to a modern shape can't have the durability of a popsicle stick handicraft. I find that some DIY-sellers rely on the kitschy aspect of "I-made-this-with-my-own-two-hands-so-it's-the-proenvironmental-choice" instead of making something of worth that will last as well as the original vintage item.

As well as loving the look of vintage clothing, another reason I prefer to wear and purchase clothes made 50-60 years ago is the durable nature and fabric quality that was prominent in bygone eras. When I buy a dress from the 1960's, I know that I can wear it, and will eventually pass it on to someone else - through consignment, donation, or giving it to a friend. I assume the piece will delight and outlast me. That's how clothing should be made.

I'm going to take this dress to the tailor and hope it can be fixed before it falls apart. It's more money than I can really afford to sink into it, but I love the dress and don't want it to go in the garbage. I feel that the DIY-movement should focus more on being a realistic alternative to big box stores, instead of capitalizing on a fad.

I got bored with my long fringe and cut it! I prefer my longer bangs to this new shape, but they will grow out soon enough.

Instead of sitting at my computer for the past couple weeks, I've been out riding my bike, going to shows, drinking dry cider on sun-soaked porches, and basically doing everything that involves being out of the house!

I found this camel coat in a thrift shop. Amazing! I love the length and it ties at the waist - a huge asset in a coat. This is one of my favourite blouses. From the 1960's era, it has a darling floral print in mint green and cream. (And it has an ascot!)

I tried to buy a remote for my camera today, as I've been having trouble getting it to focus. It doesn't have a wireless function, so I can't get a remote. The timer and tripod will have to do for now, but man, it can be frustrating.

This is possibly my favourite dress. I found it in a boutique on my travels. It's so light and flouncy, the colours are wondrous, it has a contrasting collar, and the pattern reminds me of Animal Collective's Merriweather Post Pavilion album cover.

I wore this on an all-day outing with a darling friend. We ate bento boxes for lunch, browsed used book shops, and finished the day off with ice cream. I purchased some loose leaf Earl Grey (my favourite!) and The Philosophy of Andy Warhol.

Blazer weather! How I have waited for you!

It has finally been warming up here. I still can't venture outside without a cardigan, but the sun has been out, and the city hasn't been blanketed in a perpetual drizzle.

Grandparent style is something that appeals to me. This tweed blazer with suede elbow patches was a thrifting find I picked up for a few dollars. The top is one of the brightest pieces I own - of course I was drawn to the ascot on the bust. Yellow and brown offset each other nicely, and I topped off the colour combination with peach lipstick - my spring staple.

As many readers have picked up on, I am a notorious sixtiesite. This 60's mini dress is a peach dream. The lace detail at the neck and bib is the perfect touch. I paired it with my honey brown faux-fur coat, and I love the soft tones together.

I felt that white tights were appropriate for the Mod era I was channeling. Pastel lips for Spring have been a trend bandwagon I have hopped on - I love this light lipstick, so good for warm days in the sunshine.

Not only is this dress mint, but it has the most darling ruffle hem and Peter Pan collar. Amazing! I purchased it while vintage hunting with cute friend and fellow writing student, Jenna. (Jennacide on Chictopia.)

As I said in previous posts, it's still fairly cold here, so layering with a sweater is a must. I am a huge fan of the lazy-esque look of "hey, it's cold, and I still want to have a shape, so I'm just going to belt and tuck this layer over this other layer." Is that a 'look'?

The weather was better, (but still chill,) this afternoon! I want to use the summer light and the flexibility I have with my free time for the next few months to try and find better backdrops for my outfit photos. My neighbourhood seems to have a lack of walls painted pretty hues, but these bushes and this olive green background seemed like a good start.

I received this dress courtesy of Romwe.com. On the site it looked pretty, but when it arrived in the mail, I was thrilled with the drape and swish of the chiffon. The pleating at the waist endears me, and the print? The perfect floral! (I think red roses on a cream background is the perfect print for floral anything - sheets, wallpaper, tea cups, dresses, et cetera) I can't wait to wear this dress all summer. The fabric is light enough to keep me cool and it's lined with a slip, so no one will see my underwear.

Many bloggers are trading in tights and coats for bare legs and blazers, but such outfits would be a fallacy for me... I live in a temperate climate... and let's be real here... it hailed today. I would love for it to be blazer weather, but it is barely hitting about ten degrees centigrade.

I'm not sure if you can tell in these photos, but it was raining while I was in this outfit. I am usually opposed to boots if they hit higher than the ankle, so I keep my feet dry by keeping them off the ground in little heels.

I deal with days that are cold and damp by layering. It's also windy, so I try to wear a little hat instead of letting the wind tug at my umbrella.

I am balancing work and exams right now, so I'm more spacey than usual.

I made a comment about cutting my own hair a few posts ago, and I wanted to point out that I have my hair cut in a salon every six-ten months and trim it myself in between visits... much to the vexation of my hair dresser. I do cut my hair, but it also styled in a salon. So, I'm not sure if I would do a really good DIY-haircut tutorial.

You will probably be sick of seeing this trench at the end of the month, but it is very rainy, and I wear it almost everyday. I think I stated this in a previous post. Anyway, I do love high-waisted skirts, especially those that feature suspenders. This skirt ends a little above my waist, which is strange. Nothing a belt can't fix!

Last year I wore white tights constantly, but this year I can't seem to get over the classic look of black tights. Maybe because I am leaning more towards Parisian chic than British Mod? I have only the maddest of love for both styles.

P.S. I'm not sure why the bottom of my tights balls like an old sweater. Oh, well!

Black and tan is one of my favourite combinations right now. Or, shall I say, black and camel. Are camel and tan different colours? Is camel a term coined by the fashion industry to make tan seem more exotic?

I am finished school for a few months, but I spent a few hours in the library today. I watched 13 Most Beautiful with a good friend of mine last night, and decided to check out a few books on Andy Warhol. Then, I just hung around for a few hours. Reading around other people can be a nice change from reading in my apartment.

Pastel pink and tan are best friends forever.

Spring on the West Coast means constant rain. I will probably be wearing a trench coat everyday for the next month. I am adverse to wearing my new (old) faux-fur jacket, as I don't want to show up where ever I am going smelling like a wet dog.

Thursday was my last day of school for the year! I have one more left after this summer, then I am a University graduate! What a thought. In the meantime, soon it will be warm, I don't have homework for four months, and steadier blogging will commence. (I say that last bit so often, don't I? It was difficult to take these photos as on this particular day it was bright, windy, and cold. Not ideal for snapping outfit pictures! As I mentioned before, I have been cutting my own hair and it is finally long enough, (bangs and overall,) to be doing what I want it to! Hurray!

I like wearing all my wardrobe items year round, instead of seasonally, and a summer dress can be made a fall or spring dress by wearing it over a blouse. I found this adorable top at a thrift store for $6. It's cream, has pleats, AND an ascot! It is my most versatile, go-to blouse.

I was sitting on a bench at school today, helping a friend learn her lines for an audition, when a gentleman approached me and told me I looked like I live in the Chelsea Hotel. This is one of the finest compliments I have ever received. I must have been channeling some serious 1960's energy.

I found this fake fur coat on the floor of a thrift store. Having worked in several clothing retailers, I picked up the habit of hanging up clothes that have fallen on the floor whenever I'm out shopping. It takes a few seconds and then the garment isn't lying there getting dirty. Anyway, I tried putting this coat back on the hanger and it kept falling off, so I tried it on. I'm very taken with the honey-tone of the faux-fur and the boxy shape. I cuffed the sleeves so it looks as if it was designed to be oversized, rather than being cut four sizes too large.

I don't have television and I don't receive a newspaper, so it was only in the last couple days that I was able to really sit down and read about the effects of the earthquake in Japan. I didn't realize how devastating it was for the land and the Japanese people, and my heart is sore over what they are going through. At times like this, as a global community, I think it is imperative to reach out and support our fellow humans in any way we can.

I found this coat in a vintage store. It has such a unique shape, and is cut from mustard-coloured wool. I didn't end up buying it and didn't expect it to be there when I went back a week later - but it was! And now it is mine! The collar is monstrous and either sits on my shoulders or I can fold it up to make a hood. It was difficult to capture all the wondrous shapes I can create, but expect to see this coat paired with a variety of outfits over the coming months.

I'm sure you've picked up on my love of neutrals by now. But, inspired by colour gurus like Erin of calivintage and lovely Lydia of Style is Style, I wore colour! I even mixed them together!!

P.S. I have been having so much trouble lately with TinyPic either taking forever to load my photos or loading half of them or timing out and not loading them at all. It puts a real strain on the little time I have for updating. Ugh!

A quick post between assignments! I orchestrated this outfit around the cardigan. I love the lace trim and wanted it to stand out. I usually gravitate to monochrome, but decided to not fall back on wearing the same thing everyday so I added mustard tights. (Mustard: the best yellow!)

I stayed up for 36 hours yesterday and just made the mistake of drinking sleepy time tea. I need to finish my homework before I pass out! I hope everyone is doing well!

This is what I dress like after I spend three days listening to the Electric Warrior album by T. Rex. I found these red pants in my pant drawer and thought to myself - 'obnoxiously red pants, why do i own you, if not to wear you?'

I wore this to an event at school. The writers in my program who graduate this year read some of their work. Going into it, I was leery of the reading being three hours long, but the pieces shared were so delightful I didn't get the least bit restless and even felt like it ended early! I go to school with some truly talented ladies and gentlemen.

Also, yes, I am in love with this collar.

I love the light blue of this button up. I purchased it to wear unbuttoned over a tank or v-neck, but it makes a nice top on its own. I have been wearing this hat compulsively. It sits snug atop my head without feeling like it is about to slip off - unless it's windy - and reminds me of Tom Waits. Have I mentioned that before? Well, I think of it as my Tom Waits hat.

There is a vintage fair today! According to the flyer, if I dress "retro," I could win FABULOUS PRIZES! I love any excuse to dress up... and I love prizes!

I have discovered that I can wear almost anything I want during winter - as long as I layer. I find that vintage clothing is warmer than modern clothing, anyway. Maybe because there was less use of synthetic fabrics forty or fifty years ago? More cotton and less polyester?

As you can see in these photos, I gave myself a haircut. I didn't like the shape of the bottom of my hair so I trimmed it. It's a little short for my liking, but it will grow back. My bangs are another matter. I went to trim off half a centimeter and ending up taking off half an inch. Whoops! I guess it will grow back, too, but I want a heavy fringe hovering over my eyes right now... not in a month. I guess it isn't bad for a DIY haircut!

There were some questions my lipstick/application technique on my last post. Would anyone be interested in me posting a simple photo tutorial?

Belated Valentine's Day

I did not spend or celebrate Valentine's Day with anyone this year. But, who needs a man when you have a friend like Lydia of Style is Style? She is one of my nearest and dearest, and knowing that I would be spending this holiday alone, took it upon herself to make me an adorable Valentine's Day package of CLOTHES and CANDIES!

The sheer, black blouse she picked up for me, knowing I was looking for one. The rose-ruffle topped dress and high-waisted sailor skirt were fantastic surprises! Oh, and gummy kisses. Because if I don't have real kisses, the synthetic sugar variety is the next best thing!

I don't know what I did to deserve such an amazing friend. Maybe I saved someone's child from drowning in a river in a past life. She is a beautiful person, inside and out. She is one of the best friends I have ever had with one of the biggest hearts I have ever known and I don't know what I would do without her.

I will probably never end up bored wearing faux-fur collars and lipstick. I think I could wear both everyday and still feel inspired and inventive with the rest of my look.These leopard print shorts, (cheetah print?) were on sale for $15, (or something along those lines,) on Urban Outfitters website. I snagged a couple deals while I was on there.

I have been much happier with the shape and longevity of my lipstick now that I have started using a base coat of pencil lipliner before applying the lipstick itself with a tiny brush. It doesn't smudge, smear, or come off on the rim of my glass when I'm drinking something.

It has been raining and blowing like crazy here for the past few weeks. It's the kind of weather that turns your umbrella inside out. Instead of carrying one of those around, I have been opting for a hat and long jacket. I curled my hair today and approximately five minutes later the wind blew it all out again. I have given up on curling until the weather improves, I think. My hair is light and fine and doesn't hold styles well.

I got these trousers from Urban Outfitters. They were on sale for $20. I got the trenchcoat for less - $15! I love steals of deals.

Some readers who may know a little bit about my personal life may know that a family of raccoons lives in a tree next to my bedroom window. I am pretty frequently woken up by their screeching between 3-5 a.m. I am still figuring out how to live harmoniously with these neighbours.

I wore this to class today. One of my professors told me I was adorable - this is not normally what I expect to hear from my professors, but I was very flattered! I forgot how much I love this hat until I popped it on my head this morning. I seriously wish I could wear a hat everyday. (I mean, I can, what is stopping me?) I am having a serious case of the Monday. Mondays? Monday's? I threw on this all black outfit to spend the day at school. I finished two papers yesterday. There is a big edit for the final grade of my third, (of four,) stories due for my year-long fiction class on Wednesday. I am going to work on that, tonight!

I didn't sleep last night and I'm not even tired. Does anyone have any tips on getting to sleep for those of us who are prone to insomnia? I have not given up on a normal sleep schedule.

I look a little gloomy in these photos, but I am actually just very tired. I stayed up all night doing some reading and working on a paper. 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. was nap time. Then, I went to class for five hours, drank a bucket of coffee, and now I am quickly updating my blog before I may pull the same schedule for tonight. Either I will become a champion of academia or pass out!

This cardigan is the most disgusting shade of mustard/brown yellow and I love it so much. The knit details on the front are darling and it is so cozy! Perfect for keeping warm enough in class. I am going to try to post more of my everyday school outfits - I would love to be glammy each and every waking moment, but that's not realistic for a university student, is it? I am also going to try and post more of the outfits I go out in. That's what a "what I wore" blog is for!

I went downtown on Saturday night. After sitting around the pub for a few hours, I was going home with a friend and two dudes approached us. They propositioned my friend and I for sex in the most crass way possible. (Hint: They are probably fans of Jersey Shore.) We told them to leave us alone a few times, but they wouldn't back off. So, I shoved the one guy's head into a parking meter.

The title of this post is a result of my secret love for funk music. After a night out, there is nothing like listening to a little Parliament before bed. (Lady GaGa literally has nothing on George Clinton.)

My new favourite thing seems to be combining brown with pastels. Can you blame me? It always seems to pull together such a girly-chic look! This outfit contains many of my favourite things: hat, faux-fur collar, little shorts, ascot blouse... since beginning to blog and reflect on my daily outfits, I feel that I'm streamlining my style and figuring out what I really feel is "me." Has blogging helped you with style self-definition? I would love to hear about your experience!

There are no trains in this post but I feel I have climbed aboard the pink train and my stop isn't coming up anytime soon. I wore this outfit to school and then to one of my favourite weekly events - free student dinner! I drank approximately five free cups of coffee, made dinnertime conversation with fellow students, and successfully did not drop a lemon tart on either my blouse or collar. (Seriously, someone's grandma makes the most amazing lemon tarts.)

I love this dress! I wear it pretty frequently during winter. The pink is a warm knit and it's so easy to slip on before going out for a day of classes.

I am a huge fan of the over-the-knee socks trend, but unfortunately, most over-the-knee socks aren't long enough to go over my knees. I made the mistake of buying over-the-knees from American Apparel and they ended up pinching just above my knee. By no means am I a giant, so I assumed I would fit a "one size fits all." Other over-the-knees wouldn't stretch high enough and went halfway over my knee. I solved this problem by buying thigh high socks and folding them over so they sit over the knee. I was so pleased to figure out this trick and wear my socks all the time, now.

Faux fur cape town, population: me. I saw this fake fur cape on Etsy in the vintage section and nearly lost my mind. This is the first time I posted it, but I did wear it to the Chictopia Conference in 2010! My long time readers will know this cape fits snugly into my penchant for clothing that has a classic feel or romanticism.

It is the first week of school and I have already completed and handed in three assignments! (Two yesterday, one today.) I am taking a weekend trip to visit Lydia tomorrow, though, and I am so excited!

I am back at University now with my porch and my wardrobe. The holidays were a much needed break from school. I slept, visited old and gold friends, and was generally unproductive in all aspects of my life. I found this coat in a thrift store while I was home and love it so much. The moss shade of green offset by gold, rose emblem buttons is so classic and romantic. It does, however, contain enormous shoulder pads that I need to remove. I didn't realize how big they were until I took these photos... which is why I'm hunching a little in all of them.

I usually don't make New Year's resolutions but this year I did. I want to crack down on myself and write for at least half an hour everyday, get my driver's license, and learn to machine sew. What are your goals/lack thereof for 2011?

I didn't bring my tripod to my hometown as I remembered owning one here. Of course, once I arrived and searched my room, I couldn't find it.

My favourite things to wear this winter are:

1. Sheer, black nylons, (with socks!)
2. Cardigans or v-neck sweaters with a collared blouse underneath.
3. Ascots.
4. Snow all over my clothing.

(One day I will learn to tie a neat and tidy bow.)

I think my favourite winter album this December is Sung Tongs by Animal Collective. Maybe because it's so jangly? Tracks like 'Winter's Love' and 'Kids on Holiday' are perfect for snowy evenings.

I never wear my hair up. I was hesitant to post this outfit, because it was several paces outside of my comfort zone, but what fun is personal style if you don't try new things? No fun.

It is my most sincere wish for this scarf to be about two feet longer... but we can't always have what we want. I love the colour, though, and it is the perfect thickness for the cooler months. I don't understand why I don't wear this skirt more often. The ruffle bottom is my favourite, but the elastic waist is not. This is why thick waist belts were invented.

This was an outfit from a week or so ago - simple for being studious. I am going to post a few catch-up looks, as stated previously.

It is December and I am balancing working part-time, writing, getting back on blogging, and figuring out my new camera! Winter is my favourite season. It snowed two feet two nights ago. I laced up my ankle boots and walked around my neighbourhood, listening to music. It was magical. There is something about snow and the cold that is so beautiful and romantic to me. Maybe I read The Snow Queen too often as a child?

P.S. This was the day I got my hair dyed; why is it that I can never make my locks as shiny and neat as the hairdresser can?

I wore this look to a reading for the English department's undergraduate literary journal. What a mouthful. It was really fun! Writers from both the writing department, (which I am in,) and the English department shared their work. Some wonderful musicians performed and there was both wine and beer at a reasonable price. I did feel bad for some of the last readers, though, as everyone took advantage of the cheap booze and when one of the last fellows was reading translations of Latin poetry half the audience thought this fairly dry subject was hysterical...

I found this angora cardigan at one of my favourite thrift stores. By my standards, it was kind of expensive, ($15,) but it is the softest garment I have ever felt and the prettiest shade of baby blue. I want to wear it everyday. I hemmed this skirt myself! Hemming by hand isn't actually that difficult or time consuming. I completely messed up on making this too short/a clean hem but you know what? No one ever notices.

My love affair with neutrals continues.

If I look tired and stressed out in these photos... it is because I am tired and stressed out. If I look damp, it is because it is raining.

I got this adorable pocket skirt from Mel at Idée Géniale! I have been searching for a pocket skirt for months but couldn't justify/afford dropping forty dollars on one at American Apparel. I love red and gold. I love cardigans in winter. I love how bright and crisp the days have been in November.

I hope everyone is well. If you haven't already, I suggest you watch the Spike Jonze, (Where the Wild Things Are,) directed video for Arcade Fire's "The Suburbs." I cried. Jonze captured the tenderness and sincerity that drives the actions of kids who grow up close to each other. I grew up in the suburbs and parts of it hit pretty close to home.

Just a quick post to let you guys know I'm still alive and playing dress-up! I was very pleased with how this looked. I find sometimes I put outfits together in my head but they don't end up making the shapes or coming together like I imagined.

Another thing that pleases me is that almost everything I'm wearing is secondhand. The blouse, blazer, belt, and tie cost me around $8 together. I'm off the hook as far as my eco-footprint is concerned for everything except the shorts. Speaking of which, I adore pleated shorts with a high waist - don't you?

This was the outfit I wore to the Deerhunter show! I may have mentioned this earlier, but it was the best concert I have been to thus far. (It beat out seeing The Arcade Fire in a park.) I left the venue a little foggy in one ear and in a state of euphoria. Seeing a band you love is such a wonderful experience - especially when they put on such a solid show.

I redeemed this skirt from Liz of Late Afternoon via Chic Rewards. It's old, gold, and brocade. I cut off about three inches and taught myself to do an invisible hand hem with this YouTube tutorial.When I got this blouse it had long sleeves. I added the strings of pearls. I love taking beautiful pieces and changing them just a little so they are perfect for me.

I am terribly excited to wear these shorts all winter. They're so cozy. They have a flattering high-waisted fit, so I can tuck blouses or tanks in or just throw a sweater on top. I don't wear this blouse often, but it is one of my favourites! I love garments with a hint of Victorian style. The accordion pleats and high collar are princeless... and by that I mean I paid $10 for it.

I complain about schoolwork stress too often. I am so lucky to have the opportunity to get a post-secondary education. I am also so lucky that my mother supports me as an arts student. (Well, arts and social sciences, now. I was just a writing student up until last year, though.) That said, I have an exam worth 40% of my grade on Tuesday, 13-page assignment, and two short stories to write.

I wore this to study in the library at school. However, once I got to campus I ran into some friends who were going for beers and dinner at the pub so instead of studying I played rock-and-roll bingo! We made up for it by studying until midnight at a coffee shop, though.

My next fiction piece has to be based in a time I have never lived in a place I have never lived. I ambitiously decided to base it circa 1750 in and around England starring pirates. I didn't take into account how much research I would have to do! What were the ships made of? What were the candles made of? What was the pirate costume and what materials was it made of? What was the terminology? What are the parts of a ship? I have my work cut out for me, but as previously stated, I am stubborn and determined to put the work in to make it a good piece.

Time to burn the midnight oil! I hope everyone is having a lovely weekend.

Here I am, prancing on my porch. I have been having this dilemma lately, (always,) that photos look fine on my camera, but when I upload them they are really dark. When I try and lighten them they get grainy. Augh! I am in the process of pricing and picking out a new camera.

I ordered these Miu Miu-esque shoes from Forever 21 Canada without trying them on. They are beautiful and tall and so classic sassy. I'm sure other bloggers have mentioned this, but they have a six inch heel and when I initially put them on I could barely walk in them. I am not the type of girl who hoards clothing I can't or don't wear. I started wearing these heels around the house. I was determined to learn to stand in a six inch platform. I can now stroll with enough confidence to see myself wearing them out to a movie or even a gallery opening - if I were someone's date and clung to his arm all night.

In closing, I am stubborn and I like cozy sweaters.

I have been listening to a ton of Jay Reatard and only ducking out of the house to run errands, go to library, or attend Lady GaGa costume parties. I didn't get shots of my Lady G party outfit - but I will recreate it.

I am fairly neutral on the subject of GaGa, but I emulated Siouxsie Sioux with my look in salty defiance of her air wave dominance. I don't own enough black silk or corsets to really bring out a Siouxsie look, but now I will be on the look out when I am on my thrifting excursions! Sometimes, a lady has to bring it back.

At the party, I complimented someone on the David Bowie-esque lightning bolt on her face. She replied, "actually, Lady GaGa did it." I should have seen it coming, but a part of me died.

I have said it before, but as the months get colder I drift backwards in time to be further embedded in 1960's style. Berets, buckle shoes, and little dresses, please! I can't wait to start pulling out the heavy eyeliner and nude lipstick.

I always have the best intentions to buy one of those laminated calendars and write in all my mid-term and paper due dates on it. I have yet to act on this. I realized on Wednesday that not only do I have the rewritten copy of my first short story due for a final grade this Wednesday, but in two weeks I have to hand in a new short story based somewhere I haven't lived in a time period I haven't lived. For my short fiction lecture class, in two weeks, I have to hand in another new short piece for editing. Let the writing commence! I feel I have to ban myself to my room, burn a lot of Nag Champa, drink a lot of tea, and get some serious creative juice flowing. I am overwhelmed, but I am also one of those people who can sit down and write or edit for ten or eleven hours with minimal movement. This is a skill I have probably developed due to procrastinating.

I think about wearing a petticoat at least once a day, but today I had to wear a petticoat. I have been wanting to fill out a full skirt with white ruffles for months, (perhaps years,) and this skirt that I picked up for less than $20 at Urban Planet is perfect. The colouring reminds me of Alice in Wonderland. Maybe because of the blues together?

I have been dragging this cropped, wool coat around for a couple years now. Whenever I open my closet I think, "I need to wear that." It has an amazing cut and fit. This look may not be modern or realistic in terms of recent trends, but I have this inherent need to romanticize the universe as it exists around me. All I want in my apartment are old silk slips, petticoats, candlesticks, lace curtains, Tom Waits records, piles of books, and a menagerie of brass animals.

I love this dress so much. When I bought it my friends said: "uhhh... Mitzi... do you really need a floral, pink dress?" But, of course I do. I paired it with white tights - my winter staple! - and a little wool beret for my favourite type of classic look. These shoes are quickly becoming another staple in my life; three-inch heels are the perfect height for being on campus all day.

A lot of my favourite dresses are of a thicker knit and I have to wait until cooler weather to wear them. Most of my 60's dresses are of a thicker knit, actually. (Mod, why were you so good?) Half a century ago garments were sewn to last. It's nice to think that I will love and adore this dress, it will outlive/last me, and will be passed on to some other lovely lady who will get just as much enjoyment out of it!

My weekend was spent studying, birthday celebrating, and listening to Halcyon Digest. I don't know about the rest of you Deerhunter listeners, but I am really digging "Revival," "Desire Lines," and "Helicopter." I am so happy to be able to wear hosiery, again. Autumn really is the best season for dress. I feel like my everyday fancy is taken up another level whenever I slip on nylons - they make me feel that much more put together.

I snagged these scalloped shorts off of Urbanoutfitters.com when they were on sale for $14. I love scalloped edging! It's so whimsical and feminine. The edges on these shorts aren't finished, but I wonder if hemming a scalloped edge by hand or on a sewing machine is really arduous. I would love to thrift and scallop hemlines to give an old piece a girly edge.

I threw this on to run a few errands. When you're glued to your computer/books all day, it's hard to motivate yourself to get into something fancy to step out for an hour. I stopped by the library, picked up an envelope of writing edits from my fiction workshop, purchased three high-lighters, took out some money for the eco-village fieldtrip, and bought a beer for tonight's reading. I know that drinking is not conducive to learning... but having one while reading over fifteen edits of your short story is nice.

As you can see: I'm getting slightly better at curling my hair. I'm getting dressed up to go out tomorrow night: I will try to get some night time shots! As with anyone, how I dress for going out is quite different from my daytime/school look.

I am in love with full skirts above the knee and little socks. Oh, and baby pink. (But when am I not in love with pastels?) Today I took a pink break and opted for navy and cream instead. I love mixing bold colours with pastels. I love mixing things that contrast: masculine/feminine, bold/subtle, bright/soft, black/white.

School is back in full swing, again! This weekend I must study, write, edit, take a field trip to an eco-village... oh, and party. How is everyone managing her or his school year?

Darling members of the online fashion community: I HAVE TICKETS TO SEE DEERHUNTER. I kissed the last bit of my last paycheque away on the ticket and am already dying with anticipation. If you are going to the Vancouver show feel free to come say hello! We can drink beers together and watch Bradford flail around on stage in a dress and tell us grossly inappropriate stories from his childhood. Perhaps we will get to meet Bradford and you can witness me faint!

I don't know why I didn't love full skirts sooner. They create the girlish illusion of a slimmer waist and legs. I have a secret love for skinny suspenders as well, but don't often wear them. They are the perfect contrast to this peach, froufrou blouse: complete with ascot and embroidered roses. Some of you may recognize this blouse from previous posts. It is one of my favourites but I only take it off the hanger for special outfits.

I was so pleased my book post went over well! You are all reinforcement to my theory that we fashion bloggers are intelligent, well-read ladies. Or maybe I just like having people to share my book nerd boat.

I double-denimed. I told myself I wasn't into it, but I really like this loose, comfortable denim shirt and wanted to wear it more often. Personally, I feel that double-denim is best when wearing two different washes. When I see light wash denim together all I can think of are American ranchers in the 1970's. But you know what? If you like dressing like an American rancher circa 1976 - more power to you. Wear what makes you feel good.

Speaking of which, I believe there is some rule about not wearing short-shorts unless one has toothpick thighs. But I wear tiny shorts all the time, because baby, rules were made to be broken.
